Montenegro is a country in the Balkans, bordering the Adriatic Sea. Throughout its history, it has been under the sovereignty of many states, but it has continued its struggle for independence. We can summarize the general history of Montenegro as follows: Antiquity: Montenegro was a part of Illyria and was inhabited by Illyrians. The Roman Republic conquered Illyria and incorporated the region into the Illyrian province. Middle Ages: Montenegro was the territory of three Serbian principalities, Duklja, Travunia and Raška. Duklja gained independence from Byzantium and established a kingdom. Then it became part of the Serbian states ruled by the Nemanjić dynasty. The name Montenegro was first used in the late 15th century. Ottoman Period: Montenegro came under Ottoman rule, but regained its independence in 1696. Theocratic and secular principalities were established under the Petrović-Njegoš dynasty. Montenegro's independence was recognized by the European powers at the Congress of Berlin in 1878. Century: Montenegro became part of Yugoslavia after World War I. II. It was occupied by Italy during World War II, but was rescued by partisans. In 1946, it became one of the six autonomous federated units that formed Yugoslavia. After the collapse of Yugoslavia in 1992, it established a federation with Serbia. Century: Montenegro declared independence through an independence referendum in 2006 and peacefully separated from Serbia. Montenegro, which is in the process of membership in NATO and the European Union, is developing as a stable and democratic country in the Balkans.
